The Promise


A four-part drama from acclaimed writer/director Peter Kosminsky.Drama following the parallel stories of an 18-year-old Londoner on a visit to present-day Israel and her grandfather, a soldier in the British peace-keeping force in 1940s Palestine. Erin sets off to spend the summer with a Jewish friend, and takes her grandfather Len’s diary with her to learn more about his life. Intrigued by his tale, which begins in the final days of the Second World War, she retraces his steps in a bid to fulfill a promise he made more than 60 years previously.

Episode 01 - (07/02/2011) The episode begins in 1940s Palestine, where Len meets Abu-Hassan Mohammed, an Arab charwallah working for the British Army. Len is appalled to see how Mohammed is treated by some of the soldiers as he attempts to serve tea, so he intervenes to discipline them. A friendship grows between the two men after the incident.In modern Israel, Erin is experiencing the aftermath of the attack on a café by a Palestinian suicide bomber. She decides to leave Israel at the earliest opportunity, but first she reads the end of Len’s diary and is shocked by what she discovers. Despite the trauma of the café bombing, Erin resolves to stay in Israel while she delves deeper into her grandfather’s story.

Episode 03 - (20/02/2011) Erin becomes determined to discover what happened to Len and Mohammed after reading about her grandfather’s relationship with the charwallah’s family. She puts herself in danger by heading to the West Bank in search of answers – but her behaviour attracts the attention of the Israeli army. Drama, starring Claire Foy, Christian Cooke and Ali Suliman.

Episode 04 - (27/02/2011) Len tries to get Mohammed and his family out of Palestine following the British Army’s decision to withdraw from the territory – only to find the news has caused chaos at the docks in Haifa. Amid the noise and clamour, events take an unexpected turn – prompting the soldier to make a fateful declaration. In present-day Israel, Erin refuses to be deterred from her search for Mohammed’s relatives – even though the trail leads her into the hazardous Gaza region. Conclusion of Peter Kosminsky’s drama, starring Claire Foy, Christian Cooke and Ali Suliman. Last in the series.
