Episode 23 - Two Finalists Are Sent Home Live (31/03/2011)

The Top 11 results show started with another fright. We were told, "You won't believe who is going home." Ahh! I can't take it two weeks in a row! But then again I like everyone so I'd probably be a little surprised no matter who it would be.

Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, and Steven Tyler took the stage. It didn't look like Jennifer because her hairstyle was different. Also, Ryan Seacrest did away with the Don Draper hairstyle from the previous night.

More than 55 million votes were cast, which is a record-breaking number at this early stage of the competition. The Top 11 took the stage and I expected performances of songs like "Crocodile Rock," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," and "Love Lies Bleeding." But that wasn't the case. For the first time on a results show, the Idols paired up and each sang a song similar to what suits their sound.

First, country teens Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery gave an amazing performance of Randy Travis & Carrie Underwood's "I Told You So." Both Lauren and Scotty are Carrie fans, so it must've been surreal to sit on the same stage where the Season 4 winner performed the song on a Season 8 results show. By the end of the performance, the judges gave Scotty and Lauren a standing ovation. I hope they perform this duet on tour! But just like that, Ryan called them over for the results. Now the other contestants will get nervous when they're singing, knowing they're minutes away from finding out their fate. Although they looked nervous, both Lauren and Scotty were able to relax--they're in the Top 9!

After watching a superhero themed music video to "Kryptonite," we checked in with the finalists in the bleachers. Casey explained he got a trim instead of a shave because he's "a beardy kind of guy." James showed off his WWE custom made belt, which looked like a watch for Flavor Flav.

Naima Adedapo and Jacob Lusk paired up and performed Ashford & Simpsons' "Solid." They danced a little bit during their performance and had fun with the song. Naima's earrings looked so heavy; I was concerned for her lobes. When they finished performing, Ryan revealed that Naima was in the bottom three, but Jacob was safe.

Season 3 winner Fantasia returned to the stage that made her famous and she performed her single "Collard Greens & Cornbread." Fantasia has been in the picture for seven years now, but I still get amused when I hear the transition from her squeaky speaking voice to her sultry singing voice. She told Steven Tyler she loved him and she received a standing ovation from the judges and finalists. Speaking from experience, Fantasia told the Top 11, "This is a tough business; you gotta love what you do." Jacob's a big fan and you could tell he was so excited to be near his American Idol.

Ryan said the finalists didn't know who was up next, but since Haley Reinhart, Pia Toscano, and Thia Megia were the only ones holding microphones, I'm pretty sure they knew it was coming. The trio of girls took the stage to perform Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream." All three have very different voices, but it was nice to hear them perform a modern song. Pia and Haley both like to bend their knees into a deep squat as they sing, so it was funny watching them both do it sporadically during this number. I noticed that Naima was sitting on the cold metal stools by herself during this performance, but she was in great spirits as she clapped along with the song. Ryan said that Pia and Haley were safe, but Thia was in the bottom with Naima.

Hey, Kris Allen was in the audience with his wife Katy. Um, can he please take the stage and perform?! I guess he was only there as a fan of the show. I also noticed Katie Stevens and Andrew Garcia in the house. Idol alumni just can't stay away--even on results show nights, which probably give them horrible flashbacks!

We saw a week in the life of the Top 11 finalists, which included recording sessions and private jets to charity events where they performed and saw Reba McEntire, Muhammad Ali, and Idol winners Kelly Clarkson and Jordin Sparks. We also saw that even the fanciest of mansions in Hollywood aren't immune to leaks.

The final act from the night came from The Idol Band which was formed in the mansion. Paul McDonald, Casey Abrams, Stefano Langone, and James Durbin performed "Band on the Run" by Wings. Paul and James each played the guitar, Casey was on "the bassey," and Stefano jammed on the keys. Steven said they could open up for Aerosmith on their next tour. Get that in writing, Idol boys! Back from the save, America spoke up and voted for Casey to stick around. James and Stefano were also safe, which meant that Paul rounded out the bottom three.

Next, dancing birds took the stage along with drummers and Jamie Foxx and will.i.am who performed "Hot Wings" from the FOX movie "RIO." It looked like the opening ceremony for 2016's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The cawing in the background reminded me of Season 8's Megan Joy.

When it was time for the final results, we found out that Paul was safe, and Naima and Thia were leaving the competition. Both were Milwaukee auditioners, and Naima was the oldest girl in the finals and Thia was the youngest. Lauren looked devastated; she's in school with Thia. The Top 11 circled up for one last group hug. No need to be too sad, they'll be spending plenty of time on the road together this summer!

What did you think of the results? Did you agree? Next week is Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame week with the Top 9.
